KUCHING, July 26: The implementation of carbon storage and trading in Sarawak will only proceed after a thorough review by experts, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari emphasised that the region’s involvement in the green economy sector aligns with international protocols and standards.
He further highlighted that Sarawak’s commitment to carbon trading is also in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at addressing climate change.
“Carbon storage and trading are relatively new concepts for us in Sarawak, and our intention is to contribute to the global effort against climate change,” he stated during a doorstop interview after inaugurating the 2024 Lundu Regatta and Batang Kayan Festival, which took place today at the Lundu Waterfront in Lundu.
The Premier was responding to concerns raised by environmental watchdog Rimba Watch, which expressed worry over the potential sale of 85,000 hectares of forest land in Sabah and Sarawak, following advertisements on an online portal.
Addressing these concerns, Abang Johari stated that while Rimba Watch claims to have expert insights, the Sarawak government also consults its own specialists before making any decisions.
“We conduct comprehensive studies following international protocols.
“This is a global demand, which is why we are implementing carbon trading. If this approach is questioned, what alternatives are left?” he remarked. — DayakDaily
