KUCHING, July 1: Sarawak has a bright future ahead as a food producer, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to Abang Johari, he foresees that big industries such as the food industry will contribute significantly to Sarawak’s GDP (gross domestic product) growth and create more downstream jobs.
He said that one example is rice cultivation, which is part of local tradition that produces just enough for the family’s consumption in the long run.
“But now, rice is a controlled item. However, if you go downstream to produce rice flour, that is not subjected to control if you were to sell it overseas,” he said during a Majlis Ngiling Bidai of Gawai Dayak organised by the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) today.
He said the same applies to sago which is one of the commodities in Sarawak.
“So what we do is we strongly emphasise R&D (research and development) in terms of our food production, including rice, fruits, fish, and prawns,” he added. — DayakDaily
