KUCHING, Sept 23: The Sarawak government is open to exploring the concept of planetary boundaries to ensure that the State’s development aligns with environmental sustainability.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) news report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that Sarawak aims to adopt a science-based approach in State governance through its collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

“This approach will ensure that our development remains within safe environmental limits, while driving innovation, resilience and prosperity for the people,” he said following the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sarawak government and LSE in London today.

Commenting on the MoU, he described it as a framework that brings together Sarawak’s natural and human capital with the expertise of LSE.

“This combination of strengths will create knowledge, policies, and solutions that have an impact not only locally, but also globally,” he added.

The science-based collaboration is believed to help Sarawak formulate policies, strategies, and solutions that benefit the people while contributing to international efforts in addressing climate and sustainability challenges.

According to the Stockholm Resilience Centre of Stockholm University, the planetary boundaries framework highlights the rising risks from human pressure on nine critical global processes that regulate the stability and resilience of the Earth.

The nine boundaries are climate change, novel entities, stratospheric ozone depletion, atmospheric aerosol loading, ocean acidification, modification of biogeochemical flows, freshwater change, land system change, and biosphere integrity.
