SINGAPORE, Sept 9: Sarawak aims to become a global leader in the green hydrogen market, extending beyond ASEAN and Asia Pacific.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak is continuously advancing its clean energy strategy by exploring technology like hybrid solar-wind and solar-hydro.
“These innovations complement our hydropower expansion and are pivotal in reducing carbon emissions across various sectors.
“Together with our renewable energy initiatives, these hybrid solutions underscore our unwavering commitment to sustainable energy development and a low-carbon future,” he said when delivering his keynote speech on “Advancing Climate Change Solutions in A Divergent World” at Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC) 2024 at Raffles City Convention Centre in Singapore today. A copy of his speech text was made available to the media.
Alongside hydrogen, Sarawak is also advancing the commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from microalgae, solidifying its role in providing sustainable energy solutions across multiple sectors.
Abang Johari who is also Sarawak’s Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) further said the State aims to double its electricity capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and reach 15GW by 2035, positioning itself as a green energy powerhouse in ASEAN through global partnerships and AI-driven research to optimise energy production and distribution.
Additionally, he said that Sarawak is expanding into green methanol production apart from focusing on ammonia production for urea fertilizer, which is crucial for soil fertility and food security.
Other energy sources being explored by the State is the conversion of coal plants to biomass and the development of wave energy as part of its energy mix, Abang Johari added.
With the theme “Fueling Tomorrow’s Possibilities Together”, APPEC 2024 organised by S&P Global Commodity Insights emphasises collaboration and innovation to overcome challenges such as climate change, unlocking progress and promoting sustainability. — DayakDaily
