KUCHING, Nov 21: The Sarawak government has allocated RM3 million to set up a new entity to spearhead semiconductor chip design in partnership with international players.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed the new entity would play a crucial role in completing the semiconductor eco-system in Sarawak, moving the industry to a higher value chain, as well as creating highly skilled jobs for local talents.

He said this when tabling the Sarawak Budget 2023 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak will continue to focus on transitioning to a digital economy and improving public services. Apart from that, he said, the State government recognises the opportunities the digital economy provides to act as a new driver for economic growth.

He also said the rollout of the State Digital Economy initiatives had enhanced the State’s digital transformation in key economic sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, e-commerce, services, and digital government.

“In 2023, an allocation of about RM48 million will be made available under Alternative Funding for IoT (Internet of Things) adoption to boost productivity and yield, increase efficiency, reduce cost and dependencies on manual labour, especially in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

“This includes Digital State Government Services with an allocation of RM25 million in 2023 for the implementation of numerous digital projects, which include Integrated Service Management System; ICT Development and Enhancement Project for Lands and Surveys; Digitalisation of Water Supply such as JBALB Water Billing System; and State e-Procurement System,” he added. — DayakDaily
