KUCHING, July 28: The upgrading of the city’s riverfront stretches from Kuching Waterfront all the way up to Kampung No 5 at Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol near Satok here will start this year at a cost of RM160 million.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the construction work to transform the Brooke Dockyard into a central market is already ongoing and nearing completion.
“From there (Brooke Dockyard) and all the way along the riverfront stretches up to Satok, we will upgrade. The cost is RM160 million.
“Tonight, I want to announce it here that the project will begin this year with an initial allocation of RM10 million and it will take about four years to complete,” he said during the launching of Pertubuhan Anak Seni Bandarsah Kuching’s (PASBK) Community Hall broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) on Facebook earlier tonight.
Abang Johari who was the former assemblyman for Satok constituency, further said that the Satok Suspension Bridge has already been completed and the beautification works will continue until Kampung Kudei up to the newly-opened area – Segedup.
“We are aware that there is already a new road connecting Emart, Matang directly to Segedup near Batu Kawah through the Tan Sri Sulaiman Daud Bridge crossing the Sarawak River.
“Thus, we will establish a new settlement area there to accommodate our people who have no homes (extended families who have been residing together in a single house),” he added.
He also said the new bungalow homes would be set at a price of around RM150,000 per lot as the final product after the Sarawak government bears the land infrastructure cost for filling work.
Additionally, he mentioned that the State government has introduced a Housing Deposit Assistance Scheme which provides cash assistance up to RM10,000 to B40 and M40 home buyers for payment of housing deposits.
Among those present were Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic and Development Planning) Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, PASBK chairman Abdul Rahman Zainuddin and PASBK advisor Datuk Abdul Karim Tun Abang Openg. — DayakDaily
