KUCHING, Dec 31: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has revealed the name of the state flag as ‘Ibu Pertiwi’.

According to the Premier, unlike the national flag, which was named Jalur Gemilang, the state flag adopted in 1988 had no name.

Abang Johari also announced that Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), and Shell are the three companies that contributed to the installation of the Sarawak flagpole as part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) to society.

“Tonight, I want to announce the name of our (Sarawak) flag. If the Malaysian flag is (called) Jalur Gemilang, our flag will be named Ibu Pertiwi. And its complex area is called ‘Dataran Ibu Pertiwi’, and of course the flagpole is called ‘Tiang Ibu Pertiwi’.

“Ibu Pertiwi is our motherland. We have to protect. Ibu Pertiwi brings sovereignty to Sarawak.

“Ibu Pertiwi also casts a shadow of Sarawak’s greatness with the colours red, black, and yellow. It represents our unity, and all Anak Sarawak should be determined, work hard to defend Ibu Pertiwi, and let us develop Ibu Pertiwi so that it will be more developed and become a perfect place for Sarawak children,” he remarked.

Also present were various dignitaries and officials, including Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang; Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and his wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and his wife Datin Zuraini Abdul Jabbar. — DayakDaily
