KUCHING, May 2: The private sector is allowed to generate power with Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) serving as the main agency, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Premier said this during his speech at the ‘Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Sarawak Energy bersama Yang Amat Berhormat Premier Sarawak’ event today at Sarawak Energy Tower here.
“A public-private partnership. Sarawak Energy will play a role for all those who will supply power through private generation.
“Sarawak Energy is the main agency that develops energy; although power generation can be done by the private sector, in small equity compliance is done by Sarawak Energy.
“But they can supply energy either in terms of solar energy or the power generation that I mentioned earlier and this will increase energy production to the main grid where Sarawak Energy is the main supplier,” he stated.
Abang Johari also noted that Sarawak’s Electricity Ordinance has been amended, allowing the private sector to participate in power generation.
“So that’s the amendment that we’ve made, and I see that our future is bright as we develop renewable energy,” he added.
The event was attended by various dignitaries and officials, including Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development (MFiCORD) Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (Telecommunication) Datuk Liwan Lagang; and Sarawak Energy group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili. — DayakDaily
