KUCHING, Oct 17: The Penang government is looking to collaborate with Sarawak in the field of information technology (IT), says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“The Penang chief minister (Chow Kon Yeow) came here; the Penang government wants to collaborate with us because they have the foundry, intel—they have it over there, (and) we still have the space for us to expand,” he said.
Abang Johari said this in response to Penang being an IT hub during a doorstep interview after attending Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ graduation ceremony at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
On that note, the Premier reiterated that Sarawak needs another 30 engineers to complement the State’s goal of designing and manufacturing high-demand microchips.
“We have 20 (engineers) and we need 50, so we need 30 more and many Sarawakians have returned from overseas to work here.
“We need 30 more because we are already doing the design for X-FAB (Global Services),” he said.
Meanwhile, on Swinburne Sarawak’s graduation ceremony this morning, he said with the university now offering courses up to the PhD level for design, he said it will help Sarawak to produce graduates specialising in industrial and chip design.
He also expressed plans for the Sarawak campus to work with the Melbourne campus to produce disciplines (courses) related to aerospace and aircraft components as the State is producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and with Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) collaborating with Airbus. — DayakDaily
