KUCHING, Nov 5: Ombudsman principles of fairness, transparency and accountability must be upheld at every level of Sarawak’s public service as an essential check-and-balance mechanism, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to a TVS report, Abang Johari stressed that the ombudsman principle plays an important role in ensuring that public administration has integrity and is accountable to the people, in addition to being a check and balance mechanism in dealing with every complaint, decision and action of the government fairly and professionally.
He further emphasised that the strength of a government is not only measured by economic or technological capabilities, but also by moral and ethical values in the public service.
“Good governance begins with integrity and a sense of responsibility towards the people. This is the value we want to instill in every layer of administration in Sarawak,” he said in his speech read by Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, at the Ombudsman Day 2025 Celebration themed ‘Planting the Seeds for Good Governance’ in Kuching today.
Abang Johari also highlighted that these principles are in line with the core values of Sarawak’s administration, ensuring that every government decision and action is made fairly, transparently and in the interest of the people.
“Fundamentally, the ombudsman principle is about fairness and transparency. It ensures that complaints are heard, decisions are reviewed fairly, and public administration is held to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
“This principle must be applied at every level of the public service, from policy formulation to the front lines of service delivery,” he said. – DayakDaily
