KUCHING, April 5: New and modern academic programmes offered by Curtin University are set to be announced this October, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He revealed that these will be fresh programmes beyond the existing accounting and finance disciplines.

“In October, we will announce a more modern discipline — a new field. Even in construction, there is now a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management.

“This is a new programme, apart from the usual accounting and finance courses,” he said when speaking at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri event held at Miri Indoor Stadium today, as reported by TVS.

Abang Johari also reiterated that qualified Sarawakian students will be offered free education at universities owned by the Sarawak government.

At the same time, he expressed confidence that education can help reduce or even eliminate poverty.

“This initiative is implemented to unlock the skills of Sarawak’s youth in the new economy.

“This is what we are pursuing — to equip our young generation with the skills for the new economy,” he added.

He further noted that Sarawak has a year and a half to produce 500 megawatts of energy from a hybrid of hydrogen and gas, using gas turbines currently under construction.

“Miri will be the first place in the world to generate hybrid energy,” he said. — DayakDaily
