KUCHING, Sept 21: The 162 graduates from Nanga Samu Longhouse in Ulu Paku can contribute to Sarawak’s development, especially in the agro-economic sector, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“The graduates not only majored in sociology, arts, and literature but also engineering and technologies.
“They can contribute to the development in Sarawak, especially in the agro-economic sector,” he said during the 100th anniversary celebration of the Nanga Samu Longhouse in Ulu Paku today.
Citing an example of the oil palm sector, he said that it now requires not only planting but also planning, including the management of waste to fully utilise the crop.
He pointed out that palm oil is not the only product from oil palm trees because the waste also can be turned into biomass and fertilisers.
He said that biomass could be used to generate electricity, and the fertilisers could be used for planting new batches of oil palm trees.
“This is what we call the circular economy. It is sustainable and will continue to generate income for farmers.
“This is the new way of doing things, and utilisation of technologies is a must,” he explained. — DayakDaily
