KUCHING, May 4: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is keen to establish an aerospace course at i-CATS University College.
Abang Johari said Sarawak is now in collaboration with a UK-based company to produce compound chip designs for the aerospace industry, which are more tolerant to heat compared to silicon-based chips.
According to him, the chips will be produced by 50 Sarawakian engineers through Sarawak’s SMD (Sarawak Microelectronics Design) Semiconductor Sdn Bhd.
“We already have 50; we need about 500 more engineers, and if that happens and we have the aerospace course, maybe we can send out our satellite.
“Of course, it is very ambitious. Maybe it will not happen in my time, but there will be other leaders that come in.
“They can proceed to train our Sarawakian children (for this purpose) because ‘anak Sarawak’ is capable,” said Abang Johari during Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chambers’ (DUBS) Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri streamed live via Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook today.
He pointed out that talented Sarawakians abroad have also returned to Sarawak to help with nation-building.
For example, he said that the Sarawakian doctors in Singapore returned to build a hospital that would provide service to Sarawakians.
He also said that in Sarawak Metro, Sarawakian engineers who were working with Light rail transit service in West Malaysia have also returned, including those engineers working in the semiconductor industry in Taiwan.
“This means there is no more brain drain in Sarawak. They are coming back. Why? Because Sarawak’s economy is showing positive signs, which will benefit everyone,” he added.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari announced a RM10 million business fund for DUBS to provide training for its members, including business partners in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
