KUCHING, May 15: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has suggested that the growing success and economic strength of Sarawak may be fuelling envy among certain quarters, which he believes is partly behind the friction between national oil giant PETRONAS and Sarawak’s State-owned oil and gas company, Petros.

“Sometimes when people succeed, others become jealous. I’m concerned because Sarawak’s revenue has increased, and when that happens, some people start making noise—‘Sarawak for Sarawak, Sarawak for Sarawak’.

“In some cases, there are those who are jealous. That’s why I’ve had to deal with issues between PETRONAS and Petros. But as your leader, I will defend the rights that belong to Sarawak,” he said during Bau District’s 205th anniversary celebration and the opening ceremony of the Tasik Biru Festival 2025 and Tasik Biru Resort City held near Tasik Biru here today.

He further stated that Sarawak’s development and annual revenue of over RM15 billion are the result of hard work, unity among the people, and political stability.

“Meanwhile, their (Malaya’s) past political problems had nothing to do with us—they created those issues themselves.

“If Sarawak is progressing, don’t be jealous of our progress. When Sarawak prospers, Malaysia prospers,” he added.

Abang Johari also emphasised that Sarawak’s wealth is being reinvested into the people, including funding for free tertiary education, which is expected to cost the State at least RM700 million annually starting next year. – DayakDaily
