BINTULU, June 27: The Sarawak government remains steadfast in its commitment to embedding the spirit of Hijrah and core Islamic values as the foundation for governance and development, guided by the principles of justice, knowledge, and inclusive economic growth exemplified by Prophet Muhammad.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said that religion and governance are inseparable elements in building a just and prosperous society.
“Hijrah is not merely a physical journey undertaken by the Prophet, but a profound transformation that laid the groundwork for Islamic civilisation. It embodies the values of sacrifice and community-building rooted in faith and struggle. This is the spirit of Hijrah that we carry forward in Sarawak’s administration,” he said.
Abang Johari’s remarks were delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at the Sarawak-level Ma’al Hijrah gathering held at Bintulu Civic Centre today.
The celebration was graced by the presence of Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
He said the Hijrah spirit continues to inspire Sarawak’s progressive trajectory through a green economy, digital transformation, social inclusivity, and sustainable development.
He highlighted Sarawak’s strong fiscal position, which has been achieved through forward-thinking policies such as the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund (SSWFF) and the implementation of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which are driving growth in sectors such as green hydrogen, modern agriculture, strategic investments, and digital innovation.
“This not only demonstrates a progressive economic vision, but also reflects Islamic values that champion progress, creativity, and sustainability,” he said.

Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak government’s commitment to holistic and inclusive social development, citing initiatives such as free education, post-natal assistance, and professional training and certification programmes.
“These initiatives stem from policies grounded in integrity, transparency, and long-term vision — hallmarks of leadership that have placed Sarawak on a path toward prosperity for the benefit of all people in Sarawak,” he elaborated.
He credited Sarawak’s success to the unity and cooperation among its diverse multiracial and multireligious population, fostered by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak-led government’s principles of equality and justice for all, as enshrined in Islamic teachings.
The Premier also expressed appreciation for the vital role played by imams, religious educators, charitable trust board members, and mosque administrators in strengthening religious institutions as pillars of spiritual and social well-being.
Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to uphold social justice, embrace religious and cultural diversity, and reinforce unity among all ethnic groups.
He emphasised that the empowerment of the Muslim community in Sarawak will continue to be guided by the objectives of Maqasid Shariah—the protection of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property—within the framework of a modern nation. — DayakDaily
