SIBU, Oct 6: Sarawak’s revenue this year may surpass last year’s record of RM13.1 billion, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the figures will be revealed in the upcoming Sarawak Budget next month (November).
“Last year, the revenue was RM13 billion. Perhaps this year’s figure will be more than that and we will give back to the people to fight poverty,” he said during the launching of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu’s (PBB) Belia (Youth) wing which was broadcast live on Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Facebook page today.
As of June this year, Sarawak has recorded income of RM7.66 billion.
Abang Johari further cited former South Africa president Nelson Mandela who emphasised on the importance of education to fight poverty.
“To fight poverty is not by handout—to fight poverty is through education, according to Nelson Mandela.
“This means if we want to reduce poverty, we must raise our children and I have proven it when I initiated the bursary scheme at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu and saw the fishermen’s children graduated in accounting and engineering,” he added.
Amongst those present were PBB deputy presidents Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, senior vice presidents Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof and Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, and PBB Belia Dalat chief Muhammad Nur Syafiq Wong Muhammad Nur Amirul Iskandar Wong who is the organising chairman for the PBB Belia Wing launch ceremony. — DayakDaily
