KUCHING, Sept 4: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to establish a State-Level Salary Committee, which will be implemented this year.
According to a TVS report today, Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak chairman Zaidi Nasar revealed the matter during a courtesy call to the Premier, affirming their commitment to the defence of workers’ rights in the State.
“Follow-up action on this committee will be taken to the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala.
“This committee will consist of a chairman, deputy chairman, secretary, representatives from state government officials, and representatives of workers, including professionals.
“The aim is to discuss the salary issue in Sarawak and bring it to the national level through the National Wages Consultative Council (MPGN),” Zaidi said after the courtesy call at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya today.
He went on to say that the Amendment to the Sarawak Labour Ordinance will be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources before being approved at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) next year.
“Among the efforts to protect the rights of workers in Sarawak include paternity leave for seven days, reduction of working hours from 48 hours to 45 hours a week, and sexual harassment in the workplace,” he added.
Zaidi also said that MTUC has been allocated funds from the State government to conduct training and awareness campaigns on workers’ rights in terms of the law.
Without disclosing the amount allocated, he noted that this awareness campaign will be carried out until 2025. — DayakDaily
