KUCHING, June 8: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to construct a RM50 million Sabal Forest Reserve multipurpose centre.

Abang Johari said the complex will become a multi-function centre to provide facilities for research and training on forestry management, including recreational activities.

“Sabal Forest Reserve is indeed an important location from the point of view of research and many others.

“I have also suggested that one block be built like an apartment to cater to tourists. They can come and enjoy the environment there, especially for those seeking post-treatment (from medical procedures),” he said when attending the Sarawak-level International Forest Day 2024 held at Sabal Forestry Reserves in Simunjan today.

On the same note, Abang Johari said Sabal Forest Reserve could become a reference centre for forest management in Sarawak.

He also said that its 2,613 hectares of reserved land could be utilised to develop new methods for forest restoration efforts.

“It is not an era where we cut down trees, but preservation. Previously, our income relied on logging activities, which is why our politics also revolved around logging.

“Now we change it. We do not depend on logging anymore, but out intelligence,” he added. — DayakDaily
