KUCHING, Sept 25: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for the upcoming Jepak by-election is from Jepak, Bintulu.
He said this when pressed by members of the press regarding the potential candidate for Jepak seat, following Election Commission’s (EC) announcement of the crucial by-election dates today.
The EC has set the Jepak by-election for Nov 4, with nomination day on Oct 21.
“We will be ready for the election. On nomination day, we will just send our candidate and Nov 4, we will go for polling. That’s all and as simple as that,” he told a press conference after officiating at the 1st International Conference on Biotechnology, Smart Farming and Entrepreneurship for Food Security (BioSFE) 2023 at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.
When pressed for the name of the candidate who will be fielded from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Sarawak (PBB), Abang Johari urged reporters to be patient.
“Wait first, the candidate is in Bintulu from Jepak,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Jepak seat was vacated following the death of its incumbent Datuk Talib Zulpilip at Normah Medical Specialist Centre on Sept 15.
Talib was also Sarawak’s former Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman). He served as an assemblyman for Jepak constituency from 1996 until his passing on Sept 15, 2023. — DayakDaily
