KUCHING, Jan 13: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has high hopes for Sarawak to have an airline that would fly aeroplanes made from the State’s own chip design in the future.

He said he had established Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor, a company specialising in designing and manufacturing microchips.

“In one car, there are about 150 chips, which need their own design. Therefore, I have set up a State-owned company to produce chip designers.

“Today, we need about 500 engineers with chip design expertise. We only have 25 at present; we still need over 400 more.

“Therefore, we need more youths that would become engineers that would produce design chips because who knows that tomorrow, we would have our own airline that flies aeroplanes using chips,” he said during a townhall session in conjunction with Premier of Sarawak’s 7th anniversary held at Hikmah Exchange here earlier tonight.

Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang; Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof and wife Datin Sri Ruziah Tahir; Dewan Negara president Senator Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and wife Puan Sri Fauziah Sanusi; Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
