KUCHING, Aug 28: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has defended the State government’s plan to build a new airport in Tanjung Embang, stressing that Kuching must prepare for growth over the next 20 years instead of relying on an outdated facility.

Speaking at the earth-breaking ceremony for Padawan Municipal Council’s (MPP) new headquarters at Mile 12, Jalan Kuching-Serian today, he said the current Kuching International Airport is already overcrowded and far from meeting modern standards.

“The current airport is packed—even finding a toilet is hard, and the toilets are in poor condition. This is why we need a new airport,” he said.

He drew parallels with the development of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which faced similar skepticism in its early days.

“When KLIA was built, everyone complained. But look at it today—it has become a major hub.

“The same applies to us. Kuching cannot always remain behind, and that is why we must plan properly starting today,” he added.

The Premier also assured that financial simulations have been conducted to ensure the project will not compromise Sarawak’s fiscal position. — DayakDaily
