KUCHING, Oct 19: Despite being impacted by the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, which impacted oil prices, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg assured that development for the people will not be disrupted.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of Sarawak Youth Week 2025 in Bintulu today, which was live-streamed by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Abang Johari said more details on the matter will be unveiled during the tabling of the Sarawak Budget 2026 at the upcoming Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting next month.

“This year, although (oil prices were) impacted by Trump’s tariffs, we can still bring development to the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari said that the State’s revenue saw a spike from RM6 billion when he first assumed office in 2017 to RM14 billion in 2024.

In this regard, he urged the youth to equip themselves with the necessary skills and knowledge so that they can bring Sarawak to greater heights, which is why the State government is offering free tertiary education next year.

“You have to be knowledgeable and be able to manage our economy. Your expenditure and income must be balanced, and must have a surplus fund. In Sarawak, we have a sovereign fund—other states in Malaysia don’t have it—and it is for our future.

“Whoever leads Sarawak must have the knowledge to do so. If future leaders don’t have a vision, then they cannot bring us in the right direction, and our State will be in chaos,” he said.
