KUCHING, June 1: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang honoured the Gawai ‘Ngabang’ tradition by attending the open house hosted by former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Alfred Jabu Numpang today.
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the Premier’s presence signifies support and reverence for cultural heritage and customs of the Dayak community in Sarawak.
The Premier and his wife received a warm welcome from Jabu and his wife Tan Sri Empiang Jabu as along with their son, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu upon their arrival at about 1.25pm.
Shortly after, Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi joined the gathering.
Following their visit to Jabu’s residence, Abang Johari continued to the open house of Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (Tropi) director Datu Dr Lulie Melling and husband James Chabu at their residence on Jalan Arang.
Lulie is a renowned peatland scientist in Malaysia and worldwide, particularly in the fields of tropical peatland ecosystems, greenhouse gas fluxes, and agro-environmental management of tropical peatlands.
Moreover, her contributions extend to the establishment of a global repository for peat and tropical peatland research, benefiting not only Sarawak but the world at large.
Among others present were Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Works Malaysia Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, and Deputy Minister of Law, MA63 and Sarawak-Federal Relations Datuk Sharifah Sayeed Aman Ghazali. — DayakDaily
