KUCHING, Oct 24: The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising how information is disseminated in journalism, but it has also raised significant concerns about ethics in the field.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Malaysian Press Institute’s (MPI) training programme for Sarawak journalists at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre today, he remarked that AI technology in journalism can be either beneficial or detrimental, depending on how it is applied.

Using generative AI as an example, he explained that the technology generates information based on the data it is fed.

“However, it is ultimately up to media practitioners to ensure that AI-generated content is used ethically, for good rather than harm.

“What’s even more concerning is predictive AI. It is almost like reading minds—yours and mine. That’s scary,” he said.

Abang Johari also discussed how technological advancements are impacting traditional print media, as information can now be shared online within minutes, long before it reaches print.

“Live online streaming allows people to hear exactly what’s being said, whether from official or unofficial sources. The advantage of this is that words can’t be twisted,” he added.

He emphasised that all content presented to the public must uphold a high standard of integrity.

“Continuous formal training is essential to improving ethics in news reporting and ensuring reliable information. Journalism today requires us to uphold stronger ethics and a high level of credibility in all aspects, even in our everyday conversations,” he concluded.
