KUCHING, Jan 26: The Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division Sarawak will hold its Chinese New Year Gala Dinner on March 1 at the Unit For Other Religions (Unifor) Complex, resuming its pre-pandemic ticketed format to support the organisation’s operational needs.

The federation said the decision was made after careful consideration, as previous Chinese New Year dinners held during and after the Covid-19 pandemic were conducted on an invitation-only basis due to economic constraints and limited financial resources.

Vice president Wilson Tan, who leads the organising committee, said the gala dinner aims not only to celebrate the festive season but also to unite the Chinese community, promote traditional Chinese culture and strengthen community ties.

“Each table, seating 10 persons, is priced at RM1,200, with the organising committee targeting 80 tables.

“Member associations have been urged to show support by purchasing tables, while fundraising efforts are also being carried out through sponsorships from the federation’s advisory council, corporations and individuals,” he said at a press conference held here today.

The guest of honour for the gala dinner will be Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Meanwhile, the federation will also organise a media appreciation luncheon to recognise the long-standing role of media practitioners in providing objective and professional coverage of Chinese community affairs.

The luncheon, organised by vice president Chew Kien Liang and his team, will take place on Feb 8 at 11.30am at The Mandarin Restaurant here, with about 150 media practitioners registered to attend. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian will be the guest of honour.

“The luncheon will include the distribution of festive red packets, lucky draws and karaoke sessions, providing an informal platform to strengthen ties between the media and the Chinese community,” said Chew.

The federation expressed appreciation to members of the media for their continued support, noting that their reporting has helped document the development of the Chinese community while enhancing public understanding of its contributions in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
