KUCHING, Jan 13: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today said the matter of Petroliam Nasional Berhad’s (PETRONAS) motion to seek clarification from the Federal Court on the regulatory framework governing its petroleum operations in Sarawak is best addressed by the judiciary.

Speaking to reporters after the Majlis Amanat Perdana for Sarawak Civil Service at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today, Abang Johari said the issue involves both the federal government and the Sarawak government, making it appropriate for the court to provide direction.

“They are seeking guidance from the court, so let the court determine,” he said.

Asked whether such a move was standard, the Premier said it is not unusual for parties to seek judicial clarification.

He added that the legal process is unlikely to have a significant immediate impact on ongoing operations.

“At the end of the day, all parties need to find a solution. It is about clarity,” he said.

On speculation about the future relationship between PETRONAS and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), Abang Johari said the outcome will depend on the court’s ruling.

“That depends on the court’s decision.

“We are guided by the rule of law and we follow it,” he added.

On Jan 12, PETRONAS filed a motion at the Federal Court in Putrajaya seeking a ruling to clarify the regulatory framework applicable to its petroleum operations in Sarawak. The application names both the federal government and the Sarawak government as respondents.

PETRONAS said the motion aims to provide legal clarity and regulatory certainty while its petroleum operations in Sarawak continue as usual.

The company also stressed that the filing is not intended to challenge Sarawak’s development objectives or the role of PETROS, following ongoing discussions on petroleum governance and commercial arrangements in the State. — DayakDaily
