KUCHING, Nov 15: The Miri–Marudi, Marudi–Mulu (Kuala Melinau), and Long Panai–Long Lama (MMMLL) Road Project has officially been launched, with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg describing it as a major game-changer for Baram.

“The MMMLL Road will become an agent of change in Baram. Building this road is not as easy as we had to secure the funds first. (Deputy Premier Datuk Amar) Douglas (Uggah Embas) and I had to find ways to fund it day and night—we worked hard.

“Because if there are no funds, how could we build the road?” he said during the launching of the MMMLL Road Project at the Marudi Light Industrial Area, which was live-streamed via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.

Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated that the MMMLL Road project will utilise progressive and environmentally friendly construction approaches, including elevated roads and the highway information system (HIM).

He said that elevated roads are the best strategy to protect the environment and ensure that development does not harm natural habitats, noting that countries such as China and Brunei have already adopted similar technologies, which have proven effective in safeguarding ecosystems.

“The MMMLL Project will not only speed up mobility for the people, but also open up new economic opportunities, including tourism, land development, and expanded social and commercial activities in the interior,” said Uggah.

With the MMMLL Road, in addition to the Northern Coastal Highway Project, which will link Limbang and Lawas, it means that the whole of northern Sarawak will be connected, becoming an economic gateway for the people in the surrounding areas.

The RM 3.8 billion project spans approximately 142 kilometres, with an additional 33 kilometres of spur roads to enhance accessibility in the interior and is targeted for full completion by 2030.

The main alignment comprises two major packages with Package One covering the Miri–Marudi and Long Panai–Long Lama sections with a total length of about 68 kilometres, and Package Two (Marudi–Mulu), extending an estimated 74 kilometres.

In addition, 14 minor bridges and nine major bridges are planned to strengthen road connectivity and accessibility for remote communities in northern Sarawak.

Transport Minister and Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government and Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) and Marudi assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala; Baram MP Dato Anyi Ngau; and Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau were among those present. — DayakDaily
