KUCHING, May 9: Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Dato Dr Simon Poh shared his joy regarding the recent election of Pope Leo XIV, calling it a moment of celebration and unity for Catholics worldwide.
“The Catholic Church rejoices and celebrates our communion and continues to build world peace and harmony.
“The Catholic Church in Sarawak shares this same vision and work of building up our society for the common good of all in Sarawak and Malaysia,” he said to DayakDaily.
On May 8, Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the new pope and took the name Pope Leo XIV.
This followed the emergence of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney at 6.15pm Vatican time (12.15am MYT) on the second day of the conclave at the Vatican, which signified that a new pope had been chosen.
Prevost succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday on April 21. Following Francis’ passing, 133 cardinals from all over the world convened in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel to choose a new leader for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
Meanwhile, when asked for his comments on the AI-generated image of US President Donald Trump as the pope posted by the White House on social media, Poh said that the Church did not respond to it as it was not relevant and called it a publicity stunt. — DayakDaily
