Police urge driver involved in fatal Sri Aman hit-and-run to come forward

KUCHING, Feb 8: Sri Aman police have urged the driver involved in a fatal accident at KM 7, Jalan Sri Aman, early this morning to come forward to assist with investigations.

Sri Aman District Police Chief Superintendent Dennis Bunyam said the incident, which occurred at about 4.30am, is believed to be a hit-and-run case after an unidentified vehicle rammed into a husband and wife before fleeing the scene.

He said police are treating the case seriously as it involved a loss of life and severe injuries, and stressed that full cooperation from those involved is crucial to facilitate investigations.

The driver of the vehicle involved has been advised to voluntarily report to the nearest police station to provide a statement and help determine the actual cause of the accident.

“In the accident, the driver of a Perodua Kancil, Ranggau Berandak, 46, was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at Sri Aman Hospital. His wife, Chindu Malang, 36, sustained serious injuries and is still being treated at the same hospital,” he said in a statement today.

Initial investigations found that both victims were on the road shoulder after changing a flat tyre when they were struck by another unidentified vehicle.

The driver involved is believed to have fled the scene without offering any assistance to the victims.
