Police remove 757 loan shark banners in Kuching, warn of legal action

KUCHING, Oct 1: Police has removed 757 illegally placed banners on lamp posts and traffic signposts in several areas including Gita, Santubong, Tabuan Jaya, Bintawa, Sentral, Padungan, Sekama, Sungai Maong and Satok.

Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the enforcement was carried out under “Op Vulture”, launched on Tuesday (Sept 30) by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Kuching District Police Headquarters, targeting unlicensed money lenders activities.

The operation involved two senior officers and 39 junior officers, with the primary focus on dismantling illegal advertisements linked to loan shark.

“The action was taken following public complaints and forms part of our ongoing efforts to curb fraud and extortion associated with unlicensed lenders,” Alexson said in a statement today.

He further warned that individuals involved in illegal moneylending could face prosecution under the Moneylenders Act 1951 (Act 400).

“Members of the public are also advised not to be deceived by advertisements displayed without approval from the relevant local authorities and are encouraged to report any suspicious materials directly to the police,” he added.
