KUCHING, Sept 29: The police are investigating the owner of a Facebook account for allegedly encouraging rioting and inciting racial sentiments in Sarawak.
Sarawak Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dato Mancha Ata said they received a police report on Sept 26 regarding the Facebook post uploaded by user ‘Engkecong Kampung’ on Sept 23.
“The uploaded post contained seditious call apart from inviting all Dayak to give support by gathering at the Sibu Court on Oct 17, 2023,” he said during a press conference at the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) at Jalan Badaruddin today.
Mancha further said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years or both.
The case is also investigated under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year or both.
“The community is advised to use social media prudently and not to issue seditious statements that may stir the peace of the multiracial community.
“The PDRM (police) wish to take this opportunity to reiterate that strict action will be taken against any party with malicious intent who tries to disunite the multiracial people in this country,” he added. — DayakDaily
