BETONG, Dec 19: Police have launched an investigation against Facebook account owner Ucu Lana Nangga Meluan over a viral social media comment that could incite racial and community disharmony.
In a TVS news, Betong District Police chief DSP Wan Mohamad Ali Wan Malek said 25 police reports have been lodged across Sarawak regarding the comment.
“The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 504 of the Penal Code, as it contains elements of sedition that could stir hatred and insult among communities,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 17).
He added that the comment could also threaten public order and safety.
Wan Mohamad further informed that on Dec 15 at around 10.30pm, a 46-year-old man was arrested on Jalan Laichee, Sibu, to assist in the investigation.
“An application for remand has been approved for four days until Dec 20,” he said.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) urged the public to use social media responsibly and in accordance with the law.
“Any misuse of social media that threatens national security or public harmony will be met with strict action,” Wan Mohamad emphasised. — DayakDaily
