KUCHING, Aug 29: A police officer has been brought to trial in the Sessions Court on a charge of raping a woman in April last year.
The accused, Junaidi Jamat, who is in his thirties, vehemently denied the charges as he appeared before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.
The specific charge against him falls under Section 376(2)(f) of the Penal Code, which carries a potential sentence of imprisonment ranging from 10 to 30 years, in addition to the possibility of caning.
Judge Afidah, after due consideration, granted the accused bail set at RM10,000, with the condition of providing one local surety. The proceedings have been marked for case management on Oct 5.
The charge levelled against the accused claim that he engaged in the alleged rape of a woman who was 22-years-old at the time.
Intriguingly, it is asserted that the victim had given consent, but this consent was allegedly coerced through the misuse of his authority as a police officer.
The purported incident is said to have occurred in Kuching on April 16, 2022.
