KUCHING, Sept 25: Police have confirmed that investigations into a case of excessive pranking involving a student in Miri are ongoing, despite the victim’s decision not to pursue the matter.

In a TVS news report, Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Lim San Aik emphasised that the police treat bullying seriously due to its potential adverse effects on students.

He revealed that statements have been recorded from the victim, the victim’s parents, and friends, while the student also underwent a medical examination.

“Medical results showed no serious injuries, but the investigation will continue because excessive pranking can escalate into bullying.

“Although the victim and his father have chosen not to proceed with a formal complaint, we are still calling in all involved parties to record their statements. What may have initially appeared as a harmless prank has gone too far and can be considered a form of bullying,” he said after attending the Sarawak Contingent Police Monthly Assembly at the Kuching Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) today.

The case arose after a viral 13-second video of a student being lifted and slammed against a pole by a group of youths at the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) Miri. After taking statements from those involved on Sept 23, police confirmed that the Sept 19 incident was not bullying but a birthday prank that went too far.

Lim also reminded students that schools are primarily places of learning, not grounds for cultivating a culture of bullying or extreme pranks.

“Even if intended as play, such behaviour is taken seriously by society, as it can impact both the school’s reputation and the students’ future,” he said. — DayakDaily
