Police arrest seven in Miri for illegal cockfighting

MIRI, June 25: Miri District Police detained seven men on charges of engaging in cockfighting.

The operation, conducted by the Miri IPD Criminal Investigation Division, took place in the Kampung Bersatu area on Sunday (June 23), around 5.30pm.

Among those arrested were three elderly men aged 61, 62, and 73. with suspects ranging in age from 26 to 73.

During the raid, police seized various paraphernalia used in the cockfighting activities.

The case is being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999.

All suspects have been remanded for two days, with their detention set to last until June 26, as further investigations proceed.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu in a statement confirmed the arrests and emphasised the community’s role in maintaining safety and environmental standards in the area.

The police urged residents to report any information related to illegal activities to the nearest police station or by calling 085-433730.
