KUCHING, Feb 9: The federal government has agreed to expand the range of items covered under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) scheme to include frozen food.
In addition, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that approximately 10,000 small retail shops nationwide will also be involved in the scheme by the end of the year.
He said this was based on feedback received, as previously, there were issues because purchases were concentrated in larger stores and specialised retail outlets, which limited the broader economic impact.
The one-off RM100 assistance for each MyKad holder aged 18 and above, which is expected to benefit 22 million citizens, will be disbursed starting today and can be used until Dec 31, 2026.
“Although it (RM100) may seem small, if a family has four to six adult members, it adds up,” he said during the Ministry of National Unity’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya today, which was streamed on Buletin TV9’s YouTube channel.
He also hoped that the assistance will be used wisely in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration, and as Muslims begin observing the fasting month of Ramadan.
