KUCHING, Sept 11: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has lauded Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s attitude in openly acknowledging that there are still unresolved issues between the federal and Sarawak governments, while expressing confidence that they can be resolved through mutual trust and respect.

“In the Premier’s speech, he acknowledged that there is strength, and that each side (federal and Sarawak governments) contributes in its own way.

“There are indeed issues that have yet to be untangled, but he is confident solutions can be found based on mutual trust and respect,” Anwar said during a dinner at a local hotel tonight, held in conjunction with his work visit to Sarawak.

He cautioned that stability must not be taken for granted.

“Look at other countries that are in turmoil; no one expected sudden conflicts to erupt here or there, resulting in unrest and chaos.

“Malaysia, by contrast, has recorded encouraging growth because of its peace and security, thanks to the roles played by the military, police, security forces and civil servants. But it is also grounded on political stability,” he added.

Earlier, Abang Johari, in his speech, underscored Sarawak’s commitment to the Federation while stressing the State’s role in strengthening Malaysia as a whole.

“In a federation, as the Malay saying goes, ‘Sedangkan lidah lagi tergigit’ (it is natural for minor disagreements to occur in relationships).

“However, these matters can be resolved in the spirit of a Malaysian family. If Sarawak is strong, Malaysia will be greater,” he said.

Their remarks come on the eve of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Implementation Action Council Meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Sept 12). — DayakDaily
