KUCHING, Feb 23: The Sarawak and federal governments will meet to discuss further the scope of cooperation between Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS), says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a Bernama news report last night (Feb 22), he said the discussion was to explore the cooperation to be undertaken by both companies involving any new projects in any field.

“The agreement reached (so far) between me, representing the government of Malaysia, and Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) is to acknowledge all legal matters.

“I, together with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadilah Yusof, will contact the Sarawak government, and if possible, we will call for a meeting to hear their proposals. I think the best solution will be achieved,” he said.

He said this during a press conference at the Madani Government 2025 Ministerial Retreat in Bangi, Selangor, yesterday.

Recently, Anwar said that the federal government acknowledged Sarawak’s aspirations to engage in the oil and gas (O&G) industry at the State-level during a Dewan Rakyat session.

He said Sarawak’s aspiration is enshrined in the Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 (Amendment) (DGO), which will come into effect on March 1, 2025, as Petros is set to take over the State’s gas distribution.

The prime minister said that PETRONAS will continue to honour all existing domestic and international contractual obligations in Sarawak.

Abang Johari acknowledged this, reaffirming Sarawak’s commitment to national interests and ensuring that gas from offshore western Sarawak and other areas is used sustainably.

This includes supporting Sarawak’s industrial growth, meeting Peninsular Malaysia’s energy needs, and facilitating clean energy production—aligning with the federal government’s vision of Sarawak as Malaysia’s Clean Energy Hub.

However, Abang Johari stressed that the execution of these contracts must not undermine Petros’ role as the gas aggregator or conflict with the provisions of the DGO 2016. — DayakDaily
