KUCHING, June 13: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysia to look up to Sarawak’s success in hydrogen exploration and emphasised that it is time for Malaysia to promote and commercialise hydrogen as one of the country’s key export products.
Highlighting Sarawak’s achievements in hydrogen production, Anwar stressed that the support of all stakeholders is crucial to achieving this goal and fully harnessing the potential of the new industry.
While acknowledging the challenges, he expressed optimism that, through collaborative research and expertise from various entities, the goal is attainable.
“The production is new, and our capacity is much bigger, as indicated by the projected RM12 billion. However, the research conducted in Sarawak is also intended for domestic use.
“This implies that we have reached a relatively advanced stage, and it is now time to commercialise the product,” he said in a news report by TVS.
This was raised during the Minister’s Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat sitting in Putrajaya today in reply to a question from Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed, who sought information on hydrogen production levels and the status of collaboration between Petronas and Sarawak Energy Berhad in the renewable energy sector.
Earlier, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, informed the August house that the Hydrogen Technology and Economy Roadmap (HETR) was developed with five strategic cores, nine strategies and 29 action plans that can greatly benefit and hold significant importance to the country.
These include diversifying renewable energy sources, positioning Malaysia as a low-carbon country by 2050, and expediting the transition to a circular economy. He also emphasised the need to enhance research, development, commercialisation, and innovation capabilities.
Anwar further explained that the Emissions Driven Scenario (EDS) model can generate revenue of up to RM12.1 billion by 2030.
“This projection takes into account the planned utilisation of hydrogen in various sectors, particularly in processing, energy, and transportation industries,” he elaborated in response to a question from Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing regarding the HETR plan formulated by the National Science Council (NSC) Meeting, which aims to generate RM12.1 billion for national revenue by 2030. — DayakDaily
