PUTRAJAYA, Feb 2: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak appeared to give a hint today that the 14th general election (GE14) may be held in July, just before the Haj season begins, Bernama reported today.
He gave the indication when addressing 1,200 imams and village chiefs who had been offered to undertake the pilgrimage sponsored by the 1Malaysia Development Bhd Foundation, at the Putra Mosque here.
“You are scheduled to leave (for the Haj) on July 14, after Aidilfitri and another ‘Hari Raya’ (Big Day), meaning that you will leave for the Holy Land after the two ‘big days’,” he said, apparently referring to GE14 as the second ‘big day’.
Najib said this would enable the pilgrims to undertake the Haj in an atmosphere of calm after having fulfilled their responsibility of having elected the government.
“So, when you are there (in the Holy Land), pray for the success and prosperity of the country in order to make Malaysia a model among Islamic nations,” he said.
The current term of Parliament expires on June 24 and GE14 must be held within 60 days after that date. — Bernama
