KUCHING, April 2: The government will take firm action against the growing spread of fake news related to fuel and electricity prices, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
In a special video message posted last night, he urged authorities, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to step up enforcement as misinformation continues to circulate widely on social media.
He added that so far, the MCMC has identified 96 fake news on social media related to rising fuel and energy prices.
“We are working in an extraordinary environment, with rising challenges, but this does not stop those who spread lies, hate, sabotage, and treachery. There is a lot of fake news about the rise of oil prices, and prices of goods based on untrue facts,” he said.
“The people are struggling, the nation is facing challenges, and we are forced to take action due to conflicts in other regions, yet what they continue to do is betray the country and its people by spreading false stories, gambling with the people’s well-being solely to gain cheap political advantage and ensure their narrow political survival,” he added.
He urged the public to choose carefully, filter information, and seek accurate facts.
“Let us work together to monitor the situation, verify information thoroughly, and take steps to safeguard our families, our communities, and our nation.” – DayakDaily
