KUCHING, May 29: The Madani government will implement the RM100 book voucher initiative for secondary school students under the Ministry of Education (MOE) and students of public higher learning institutions (IPTA) nationwide, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today.

In a news report by Bernama, he said the the RM100 assistance, that has been provided over the past few years, is now being channelled directly to the students, and he urged parents to ensure their children fully utilise the voucher for educational reading materials.

“The initiative reflects the government’s effort to promote reading among youths, as growing dependence on social media is seen to be weakening reading habits,” Anwar said when officiating the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair today.

At the same time, he called on educators to strengthen deep learning across subjects, including religion, science, and artificial intelligence (AI), and digital literacy.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to education despite ongoing cost-cutting measures in other sectors.

It has been reported that the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has proposed a reduction in operating expenditure across the health and higher education sectors as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s fiscal position.

The MOE is expected to face RM2.39 billion in cuts, making it the second ministry, behind the Ministry of Health (MOH), to account for the largest reductions. — DayakDaily
