KUCHING, Nov 4: The Sarawak government will issue an official announcement regarding the lifting of the Emergency Ordinance following the assent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah recently, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Awang Tengah, who is also the International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Minister, said with the Emergency lifted, this means the State elections must be held within 60 days.

“To my understanding the lifting of the Emergency Order was gazetted yesterday. So just wait for the official announcement from Sarawak government,” he said when met by reporters after the handing over of compensation and land titles to Samarahan residents from the Land and Survey Department, held in Intan Campus Sarawak Region in Kota Samarahan, today.

Awang Tengah added it is up to the Election Commission (EC) to decide on when the election would be held

On July 31, the King declared that the nationwide Emergency Proclamation be extended in Sarawak until Feb 2, 2022, following the resurgence of Covid-19 cases, putting the State election on hold.

However, on Nov 3, His Majesty assented to the lifting of the Proclamation of Emergency for Sarawak, after granting an audience to Head of the State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on Tuesday (Nov 2) to discuss the state’s application for the Emergency Proclamation to be lifted. – DayakDaily.
