KUCHING, Nov 6: In preparation for the commissioning of the 500MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant by December 2027, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) has ramped up efforts to strengthen its technical workforce, with 76 Sarawakian operations and maintenance technicians completing on-the-job training (OJT) with regional power industry partners.

The training, conducted in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad, Malakoff Power Berhad, and PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) Indonesia Power, aims to ensure operational readiness and build long-term local expertise for the upcoming power facility.

“The Miri CCGT power plant is one of the first projects undertaken to utilise gas availability in the State while complementing the State’s power supply. This development positions us to anticipate and meet the growing energy demand driven by new and emerging industries,” PETROS vice president for capital projects, Kidd Enau said in a press statement.

“PETROS is taking this opportunity to strengthen local capabilities and develop Sarawakian talent, in line with our Purpose of Harnessing Resources for Sustainable Progress of Sarawak and beyond,” he said.

“The completion of training for these 76 technicians will go a long way in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Miri CCGT power. Through our broader talent initiatives and strategic partnerships, PETROS continues to invest in our people, enhancing technical competencies and preparing Sarawakians to manage, operate and sustain critical energy infrastructure,” Kidd highlighted.

A further eight engineers are scheduled to complete the PowerGen Maintenance Excellence programme, while nine engineers will complete the Shadowing & Oversight Major Overhaul Inspection (SOMI) programme by December 2025.

The OJT was designed to equip the Miri CCGT’s technical workforce with the skills and expertise required for safe and efficient plant operations. Conducted through structured, hands-on trainings at power plant sites in Bintulu, Miri, Perak and Indonesia, participants gained practical experience in modern power plant operations, systems management and safety protocols, ensuring operational readiness ahead of commissioning.

By developing a skilled local workforce, PETROS is maximising local participation in critical energy projects and creating greater local employment opportunities, contributing Sarawak’s long-term economic growth. – DayakDaily
