Kuching, Nov 18: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) has strengthened its commitment to developing a world-class workforce by partnering with the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing employee competencies in the oil and gas industry.
PETROS executive chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo said the collaboration not only focuses on advancing the skills and capabilities of PETROS staff but also opens opportunities for UC students and academic staff to gain hands-on exposure to the oil and gas sector in Malaysia.
He emphasised that such a partnership is vital as university learning does not always directly translate into real-world job requirements, making continuous realignment and reengagement essential.
“I think the impact of this collaboration will be really huge. Malaysia, and Sarawak in particular, have lots of resources.
“In my view, the oil and gas sector is paramount; resources are inconsequential without personnel capable of effectively managing them, utilising them judiciously, and realising their value at the appropriate time, location, and context,” he said during a high tea cum press conference held in conjunction with the official visit of UC executive dean Professor Paul Ballantine at a hotel here today.
He added that PETROS’ priority is its people, stressing the need to build capacity, capability and leadership among its workforce.
“We want individuals who can lead and who aspire to do better for the right reasons. I hope we will not only speak about it but see this realised in practice,” he said.
Hamid noted that MoUs such as this foster meaningful relationships, adding that the ability to connect is crucial in today’s rapidly evolving environment.
“I’m happy we have formalised this agreement between PETROS and UC,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ballantine said the MoU focuses on mutual learning, research exchange and educational collaboration, ensuring both parties benefit from the sharing of expertise.
He said the partnership also underscores UC’s commitment to two-way engagement in learning from Malaysia’s innovation, regional leadership and cultural depth while offering its strengths in teaching, research and global education.
“UC is well positioned to contribute to the future development of Sarawak through education, research and innovation that align with our shared priorities and values,” he said.
