KUCHING, Dec 28: Sarawak’s gas distribution issue between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) should be clarified through a joint press statement by the two business entities, rather than allowing the matter to be continually politicised.

Senator Abun Sui Anyit highlighted this, noting that certain parties have been exploiting the issue, with some alleging that the announcement of the resolution lies within the jurisdiction of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“It would be more appropriate if PETRONAS and Petros issued a joint press statement without relying on the Prime Minister to address the resolution that is said to have been reached.

“What is important is that a joint statement from both companies would ease tensions and, if possible, resolve the issues surrounding the understanding or resolution that has been achieved,” he said in a statement today.

Abun, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Hulu Rajang Branch chief, cautioned that having politicians announce the resolution could lead to ongoing controversies instead of it being accepted as a conclusive settlement.

He pointed out that the matter had only been mentioned by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and has yet to be confirmed by the Prime Minister.

“The Prime Minister’s response was that both PETRONAS and Petros are currently detailing the agreed resolution,” Abun noted.

He further emphasised that PETRONAS and Petros, as the key stakeholders, are best positioned to address the specifics of the resolution.

“A joint announcement by PETRONAS and Petros should be welcomed by all parties. The issue should not be politicised further, as it is fundamentally a business matter better understood by the management of both companies,” he concluded. — DayakDaily
