KUCHING, Sept 9: Operations at Petroliam Nasional Berhad’s (PETRONAS) Bintulu Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities remain unaffected, despite the Malaysian National Security Council (NSC) announcing a potential security risk.

The national oil and gas company stressed that there has been no impact on its operations, and supply, assuring that the safety of employees, contractors, and surrounding communities remains its top priority.

“At present, there has been no impact on our operations, and no disruptions to our supply.

“Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, and our surrounding communities continue to be our highest priority,” PETRONAS said in a statement.

The statement came after the NSC issued an announcement regarding a potential security risk at the Bintulu LNG facilities.

“PETRONAS would like to acknowledge the Malaysian National Security Council’s (Majlis Keselamatan Negara) recent announcement regarding a potential security risk at our LNG facilities in Bintulu.

“We take such matters with the utmost seriousness, and we are working closely with the authorities to assess, and address the situation,” it added.

It was reported that the federal government has ordered immediate tightening of security at all Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu following a reported security threat, although the cause has not been disclosed.

The NSC, in a statement yesterday (Sept 8), said it had received intelligence of a potential threat against LNG facilities nationwide, particularly in Bintulu, Sarawak.

“As a precautionary step, the government through NSC has directed all LNG facilities operating in Bintulu to immediately strengthen security controls on a temporary basis while security forces and relevant agencies carry out urgent investigations into the threat,” the statement said.

However, the statement did not disclose the source or nature of the reported threat.

The NSC urged the public not to speculate and assured that updates will be provided as necessary.

It added that national security agencies are on full alert with control measures in place to address any eventuality. — DayakDaily
