KUCHING, March 5: Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), through its subsidiary company Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), has signed an agreement with Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to implement a restoration programme for Sungai Plan in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, for four years beginning 2024 to 2027.

According to a media release, the agreement was signed by Malaysia LNG chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director Mohamed Syazwan Abdullah@Laga Jenggi, Controller of Environmental Quality Jack Liam, and BDA general manager Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari.

The exchanging of the documents was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a ceremony at a local hotel in Bintulu today.

“The restoration programme is one of our efforts in supporting the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and Sarawak’s climate change policy agendas by emphasising natural resources management efficiently and in line with our commitment towards Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 (NZCE 2050).

“We hope that through this programme, we can contribute towards the conservation and preservation of the ecosystem of the area we’re operating in as well as instil the value of caring for the environment in the community,” said Mohamed Syazwan.

The Sungai Plan Restoration Programme comprises three components:

  • Creating a baseline of water quality
  • Regular monitoring and greening of the riverbank, which involves the planting of 500 saplings in the Sungai Plan area
  • The implementation of a river conservation awareness programme among community and industry players
