KUCHING, Jan 7: Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), through its Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) division, has partnered with Beicip Franlab Asia to conduct an Integrated Basin Study aimed at unlocking untapped resources in the Malay Basin, located off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
In a statement today, PETRONAS revealed that the study leverages advanced 4D modelling and machine learning technologies to examine the basin’s subsurface architecture at both basin and reservoir scales.
The project also incorporates big data analytics to predict hydrocarbon migration and entrapment within the Malay Basin.
Recognized as a “super basin” for its prolific output since the 1970s, the Malay Basin has produced over nine billion barrels of oil equivalent.
PETRONAS revealed that recent exploration activities have uncovered significant new discoveries, reaffirming the basin’s immense potential.
Beyond hydrocarbons, the Malay Basin also presents substantial opportunities for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), positioning it as a vital player in Malaysia’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
MPM senior general manager of Resource Exploration Azmir Zamri emphasised that the Malay Basin, often regarded as mature, still holds significant untapped potential, as demonstrated by discoveries such as Bunga Aster and Bekok Deep.
“Through our collaboration with Beicip Franlab Asia on the Integrated Basin Study and our AI-enabled geophysical initiatives with Earth Science Analytics, we aim to redefine what is possible and unlock new opportunities in this prolific region,” he said.
PETRONAS reiterated its commitment to ensuring an optimal and sustainable energy supply, with MPM playing a crucial role in managing petroleum arrangements and overseeing upstream petroleum activities in Malaysia. — DayakDaily
