KUCHING, May 2: PETRONAS confirms that its subsidiary, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB), has received notices from the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunications on April 30 regarding gas processing and distribution in response to several news reports.
In a statement, PETRONAS said that PCSB is statutorily authorised under the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 to undertake the company’s activities and comply with all applicable laws in doing so.
“While we respect the aspirations of the State of Sarawak, PETRONAS also has a duty to uphold the PDA 1974 and safeguard national interests.
“PETRONAS will continue to engage constructively and work closely with the federal government, Sarawak government, and Petros in exploring future arrangements to ensure regulatory clarity and operational continuity for the benefit of the industry, State, and nation as a whole.
“We are also committed to ensuring that the rights and interests of all parties, including end-consumers and investors, are addressed accordingly.”
According to a report today from Utusan Malaysia, the Sarawak government accused PCSB of breaching a State law on gas distribution.
The alleged breach, under Section 7(e) of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016, involves the operation of a plant owned by PETRONAS Carigali in Miri, Utusan reported, citing a letter of demand issued by the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunications to the company alleging that the plant has been operating without a permit.
Section 7(e) pertains to the construction, management or maintenance of gas pipelines or related equipment, fittings or mechanisms for gas distribution. — DayakDaily
